A poor man named Shakabak hadn't eaten for two days. 有个叫沙卡巴克的穷人,已经整整两天没吃东西了。

So he went to the palace of a rich old man and asked for help. 于是他去了一个富有老人的大宅邸求助。

"You poor fellow!" “真是个可怜的家伙!”

said the rich man. 富人说道。

"Sit down and eat with me." “坐下来跟我一起吃吧。”

He called for water and began washing his hands. 他吩咐人端水来,然后开始洗手。

But there was no water. 但其实根本就没有水。

Then he started cutting a roast that wasn't there. 接着,他又开始切起一块压根不存在的烤肉。

"Try the goose. “尝尝这只鹅肉。

Isn't it delicious?" 是不是特别香?”

Shakabak was starving, but he understood the game. 沙卡巴克虽然饿得发慌,但他看懂了这个把戏。

He pretended to chew. 他跟着假装咀嚼起来。

"Wonderful," he said. “太好吃了,”他说,

"I've never tasted anything like it." “我从来没吃过这么美味的东西。”

Dish after dish arrived, all of them invisible. 接着一道又一道菜端了上来,全都是看不见的“空气菜”。

He praised every one. 他把每一道菜都夸了个遍。

He never complained. 全程没有一句抱怨。

At last, the old man laughed and clapped his hands. 最后,老人大笑起来,拍了拍手。

Servants carried in a real dinner, with every dish he had described. 仆人们端上了货真价实的饭菜,之前他描述过的每一道菜全都在里面。

"I've waited years to meet someone like you," he said. “我等了这么多年,就想遇上一个像你这样的人,”老人说,

"You're patient, and you can take a joke. “你既有耐心,又开得起玩笑。

Stay and manage my house." 留下来替我管家吧。”

Shakabak never went hungry again. 打那以后,沙卡巴克再也没挨过饿。
