The night before the procession, the swindlers stayed up working, 游行大典的前一天晚上，这两个骗子熬通宵赶工，

with sixteen candles burning, so everyone could see how busy they were. 屋里点了整整十六支蜡烛，生怕别人看不出他们有多忙。

They pretended to take the cloth off the looms. 他们装模作样地把布料从织布机上取下来，

They cut the air with huge scissors. 拿着大剪刀对着空气剪裁，

They sewed with needles that had no thread. 还拿着没穿线的针在手里缝来缝去。

At last they announced, "The Emperor's new clothes are ready!" 最后他们宣布：“皇上的新衣做好啦！”

The Emperor came in with his noblest knights. 皇帝带着他最尊贵的一批骑士走了进来。

The swindlers raised their arms as if holding something up. 骗子们高高举起双手，就好像手里托着衣服似的，

"Here are the trousers! “瞧，这是裤子！

Here's the coat! 这是外套！

They're as light as a spider's web. 轻得就跟蜘蛛网一样。

You'd almost think you had nothing on, 穿在身上，您简直会觉得自己什么都没穿，

"Yes, indeed," said the knights, though there was nothing to see. “确实如此，”骑士们纷纷附和，虽然他们眼前其实什么也没看见。

The best performances need an audience too scared to stop clapping. 最精彩的表演，往往需要一群吓得不敢停下鼓掌的观众。

"Now," said the swindlers, "would Your Majesty kindly take off your clothes?" “那么，”骗子们说，“能否请陛下脱下身上的衣服呢？”
