"But he hasn't got anything on!"

the whole town cried at last.

The Emperor shivered, because he suspected they were right.

But he thought to himself, "The procession must go on."

So he held himself even more proudly than before,

and walked on as if nothing had happened.

Behind him, the chamberlains held on even tighter to the train that wasn't there.

Nobody noticed the two weavers,

who had long since packed up their gold and slipped quietly out of town.

The Emperor had lost his clothes, his dignity, and a fortune.

The one thing he refused to lose was the pretense.

Pride can survive almost anything, except admitting a mistake.

And so, with the whole town laughing,

the Emperor marched on to the very end of the street.
