The Emperor took off every stitch, 皇帝把衣服脱得一件不剩,

and the swindlers pretended to dress him, piece by piece. 骗子们装模作样地一件件给他穿上。

He turned this way and that in front of the mirror. 他在镜子前转来转去地照着。

"Heavens, how well it fits!" “天哪,这也太合身了吧!”

everyone exclaimed. 大家纷纷赞叹道。

"What a pattern! “这花纹多精致啊!

What colors!" 这颜色多绝啊!”

"The canopy is waiting outside, Your Majesty," announced the master of ceremonies. “陛下,华盖已经在外面候着了,”典礼官禀报道。

"Well, I'm ready," said the Emperor. “好,我准备好了,”皇帝说,

"Doesn't it suit me?" “我穿这身挺衬我的吧?”

And he turned once more to the mirror, pretending to admire himself. 说着他又冲镜子转过身,假装在欣赏自己。

The two chamberlains who were to carry his train bent down and groped at the floor, 负责帮他托着后袍下摆的两位侍从弯下腰,在地上摸索着,

as if picking it up. 装作把它提了起来。

Then they walked behind him with their hands in the air, 接着他们两手悬空托着,跟在皇帝身后走,

not daring to admit there was nothing to hold. 谁也不敢承认手里其实啥都没拿着。

Flattery is easiest when everyone is watching everyone else. 当人人都在看彼此眼色的时候,溜须拍马就变得最轻松了。
