A deer was drinking at a clear pool when he noticed his reflection.
"What beautiful antlers," he said, turning his head from side to side.
"I look like a king."
Then he looked down.
"But these legs!
So thin, so ugly.
I'm almost ashamed of them."
At that moment, a hunter stepped out of the trees.
The deer ran,
and those thin legs carried him across the open fields,
faster than any arrow.
He was nearly safe.
But as he entered the forest,
his antlers got caught in the low branches.
He pulled and twisted, but he was stuck.
Behind him, the hunter was getting closer.
"How stupid I've been," he thought.
"I was proud of the thing that trapped me, “我居然为害惨自己的东西感到自豪,
and ashamed of the thing that could have saved me."
What we admire most in ourselves is not always what serves us best.
