老母鸡的考验 —— 大结局

There was once a big white hen. 从前有一只大白母鸡。

She had twelve little chickens. 她有十二只小鸡。

At night, she kept them warm under her wings. 晚上，她把它们暖在翅膀底下。

One day, she took them to a brook. 有一天，她带它们去了一条小溪。

The hen wanted to go to the other side. 母鸡想去对岸。

There was a large stone in the water. 水里有一块大石头。

"Jump to the stone!" “跳到石头上！”

said the mother hen. 母鸡妈妈说。

She jumped first. 她先跳了过去。

Flap, flap, flap! 扑啦，扑啦，扑啦！

"Now, come after me!" “现在，跟着我过来！”

she called. 她叫道。

But the little chickens stood still. 但是小鸡们一动不动。

"Oh, mother! “哦，妈妈！

they cried. 它们叫道。

"Yes, you can, if you try!" “是的，只要你们尝试，你们就能做到！”

said the hen. 母鸡说。

"Just flap your wings as I did." “就像我一样扇动翅膀。”

One little chick, named Chippy, stood by himself. 一只名叫奇比的小鸡独自站着。

He flapped his wings. 他扇动着翅膀。

He tried and tried, but he could not jump that far. 他努力了又努力，但还是跳不了那么远。

The others did not even try. 其他的连试都没试。

"I must give it up," said the hen. “我只好放弃了，”母鸡说。

She walked slowly home with her brood. 她带着她的孩子们慢慢地走回家。

At home, the hen found a piece of bread. 回到家，母鸡找到了一块面包。

All the chickens ran to her. 所有的小鸡都跑向她。

They all wanted a bite. 它们都想咬一口。

"No, no!" “不，不！”

said the old hen. 老母鸡说。

"This bread is only for Chippy. “这块面包只给奇比。
