In a meeting last month,
my manager turned to me and asked a question.
I didn't know the answer.
For most of my career, I've had a method for this moment.
I talk.
I say something that sounds smart,
with long words, and I hope nobody asks again.
I've been doing it for fifteen years.
It's exhausting.
This time, I was too tired to perform.
"I don't know," I said.
"I'll find out and tell you by Friday."
I waited for the ceiling to fall.
My manager nodded.
"Great.
Thanks."
And she moved on to the next thing.
That was all.
Nobody thought less of me.
Fifteen years of pretending, and the truth took four seconds.
Three small words.
I've rarely felt so light.
