The day I got my first rain boots, it didn't rain.
I wore them anyway, around the house, for two days.
They were yellow, and a little too big.
On the third day, it finally rained.
My mother said, "Stay out of the puddles."
I said okay.
I did not mean it.
The first puddle was small.
I stepped in carefully, and nothing bad happened.
My socks stayed dry.
It felt like magic.
So I found a bigger one, and jumped.
After that, no puddle on our street was safe.
I walked home in a zigzag, from one to the next,
the water flying up around my knees.
These days I walk around puddles.
I'm wearing nice shoes.
I have somewhere to be.
But every time, a small voice says: just one.
