Summer afternoons at Grandma's were slow and hot.

The old fan turned its head from side to side,

like it was saying no to the heat.

I sat on the cool floor

with half a watermelon in my lap

and a spoon in my hand.

There was a rule, and nobody taught it to me.

You start from the edge.

You eat around and around, closer and closer.

And the middle, the sweetest,

reddest part with no seeds, you save for last.

Sometimes my cousin tried to steal it.

I guarded that bite like treasure.

I'm an adult now.

I can buy a whole watermelon and eat the middle first.

Nobody would stop me.

But I still start from the edge.

Some things taste better when you wait.
