When I was small, 我小的时候，

the power went out a few times every summer. 每年夏天总会停几次电。

The fan stopped. 风扇不转了。

The TV went black. 电视屏幕黑了。

For one second, the whole building said "Ohh" together. 有一秒钟，整栋楼的人都在齐声叹气：“哎呀——”

Then my mother found the candle. 接着我妈翻出了蜡烛。

She always knew exactly where it was. 她总是清楚地知道蜡烛放在哪儿。

We sat around the small flame, the four of us. 我们一家四口围坐在微弱的烛光旁。

There was nothing else to do. 反正也没别的事可做，

So my father started talking. 我爸就开讲了。

He told us about the river he swam in as a boy, 他跟我们讲起他小时候游泳的那条河，

and the time he fell out of a tree 还有那次他从树上摔下来，

and didn't tell his mother. 却瞒着没敢告诉他妈的事。

I had never heard these stories. 我以前从没听过这些故事。

In the candlelight, he looked like a different person. 在烛光下，他看着像变了个人似的。

Younger. 更年轻了。

Then the lights came back. 后来来电了。

Everybody stood up. 大家都站了起来。

The TV started talking again. 电视又开始响了。

I remember looking at the bright ceiling and thinking: no. 我记得自己抬头看着明晃晃的天花板，心里想着：别啊。
