Here's something I feel a little guilty even admitting. 有件事我甚至连承认都觉得有点内疚。

Some gifts are more of a burden than a joy. 有些礼物带来的不是快乐,反而是负担。

Someone gives you a thing you didn't ask for 有人送了你一件你根本没要过的东西,

and will never use, 而且你永远也用不上,

but now you have to keep it, dust it, 可你现在却得一直留着它、替它擦灰,

and feel bad every time you consider letting it go. 每次一想把它处理掉,心里就特别过意不去。

For years I held onto things purely out of guilt. 有好多年,我留着那些东西纯粹是因为内疚。

But I've come to a gentler understanding. 但后来,我换了一种更释然的想法。

The gift already did its real job the moment it was given. 礼物在送出的那一刻,其实就已经完成了它真正的使命。

It said, I was thinking of you. 它已经传达了那句:“我心里一直挂念着你。”

That part is complete. 这就足够了,这一步已经圆满了。

Keeping a dusty object forever isn't what honors the person. 把一件落灰的东西留一辈子,并不算真正尊重对方。

Their kindness lives in the memory, not the thing. 他们的心意留存在回忆里,而不是在物品本身上。
