I turned my phone off for an entire day last weekend,

and I'm slightly embarrassed by how hard it was.

For the first few hours,

my hand kept reaching for it out of pure habit,

feeling for a phantom buzz that wasn't there.

I felt anxious, like I was missing something crucial.

But by the afternoon, something loosened.

The world got quieter and somehow bigger.

I noticed things.

I had a long, slow conversation with no interruptions.

My own thoughts had room to stretch out.

And when I finally turned the phone back on that night,

I braced for a flood of urgent things.

There was almost nothing.

The world had carried on perfectly well without me watching it.

It turns out I'm far less essential

to the internet than it makes me feel.
