There's a particular kind of embarrassment

in learning something new as an adult.

When you're a kid, being bad at things is normal.

Nobody expects you to know how.

But at my age,

walking into a beginner class

and being the worst person in the room feels strangely exposing.

I signed up for a pottery class last month,

and my first bowl looked like something a toddler made.

The teenager next to me was already shaping beautiful cups.

For a second I wanted to quit.

But then I realized

that discomfort is just the price of being a beginner again.

Nobody gets to skip it.

If I let a little embarrassment stop me,

I'd never learn anything new for the rest of my life.

So I stayed.
