Soapy stopped in the theater district, 苏比在剧院区停下了脚步，

where the streets were brightest and the promises lightest. 这里的街灯最亮，可希望也最渺茫。

Outside a glittering theater, he spotted another policeman, 在一座金碧辉煌的剧院门外，他又瞅见了一个警察，

He began to yell drunken nonsense at the top of his rough voice. 他扯开破锣嗓子，像个醉鬼一样胡言乱语地大喊大叫起来。

He danced, howled, raved, 他手舞足蹈，又嚎又嚷，发疯似地闹着，

and did everything he could to disturb the peace. 使出浑身解数去破坏治安。

The policeman twirled his club, 警察转了转手里的警棍，

turned his back, and said to a passerby, 转过身去，对身旁一个路人说：

"It's one of those college boys, celebrating a big football win. “嗨，又是那群大学生，正庆祝橄榄球比赛赢了呢。

Noisy, but harmless. 吵是吵了点，但没什么坏心眼。

We've got orders to let them be." 上面有令，随他们折腾去吧。”

Miserable, Soapy stopped his useless racket. 苏比垂头丧气，停下了这番白费力气的闹剧。

Would no policeman ever lay a hand on him? 难道就没有哪个警察肯抓他了吗？

The Island began to seem like an unreachable paradise. 那座岛此刻在他看来，简直就像个遥不可及的天堂。

Funny how the harder you try to be noticed, 说来真是讽刺，你越是拼命想引人注意，

the more invisible you become. 反而越像是隐了形一样没人搭理。

He buttoned his thin coat against the icy wind, and walked on. 他扣紧单薄的外套抵御刺骨的寒风，继续往前走去。
