广场上的惨叫

Police Inspector Ochumelov was crossing the market square in his new overcoat. 警官奥楚蔑洛夫穿着件新大衣，正穿过集市广场。

Behind him walked a red-haired policeman, 身后跟着个红头发的巡警，

carrying a sieve full of gooseberries they had just confiscated. 手里端着个筛子，里面盛满了刚没收来的醋栗。

All around was silence. 四周静悄悄的。

The open doors of the shops gazed out at the world like hungry mouths; 店铺敞开的大门像一张张饥饿的大嘴，呆呆地望着外面的世界；

there wasn't even a beggar in sight. 街上连个叫花子的影子都看不见。

A quiet town makes a small man feel very large. 在这冷清的小镇上，小人物倒觉得自己神气得不得了。

Suddenly, a shout broke the silence. 突然，一声大喊打破了宁静。

"So you bite, you little devil? “好你个小畜生，还敢咬人？

Don't let him go, lads! 大伙儿别放它跑了！

Biting isn't allowed these days!" 如今这世道可不兴咬人！”

A dog came running out of a timber yard on three legs, yelping. 只见一条狗嗷嗷叫着、三条腿蹦跳着从木料场里窜了出来。

A man in a starched shirt and an unbuttoned vest was chasing it. 后面追着个男人，身上穿着硬领衬衫，马甲敞着怀。

He threw himself forward, fell flat on the ground, 他猛地往前一扑，整个人趴倒在地上，

and caught the dog by its hind legs. 一把拽住了狗的后腿。

Within seconds, a crowd began to gather. 一眨眼功夫，周围就围上来一群看热闹的人。
