除夕的严寒

It was terribly cold. 天气冷得要命。

Snow was falling, 天上还下着雪，

and it was almost dark on the last evening of the year, 天色已经快黑了，这是一年里的最后一个傍晚，

New Year's Eve. 也就是除夕夜。

Through the icy streets walked a poor little girl, 在冰冷的街道上，走着一个可怜的小女孩，

with nothing on her head and nothing on her feet. 她头上什么都没戴，脚上也光着。

She had left home in her mother's old slippers, 她出门时其实穿着妈妈的一双旧拖鞋，

but they were far too big, 但那拖鞋实在太大了，

and she'd lost them both while dodging two speeding carriages. 为了躲开两辆飞驰的马车，两只鞋全给跑丢了。

One was nowhere to be found, 一只怎么也找不着了，

and a boy had run off with the other, laughing. 另一只还被一个小男孩嘻嘻哈哈地拿跑了。

So now she walked on bare little feet that were red and blue with cold. 所以她只能光着小脚丫往前走，脚冻得又红又青。

In her old apron she carried a bundle of matches. 她的旧围裙里兜着一大把火柴。

Poverty is loudest on the nights when everyone else is celebrating. 别人都在热闹庆祝的夜晚，贫穷往往显得最扎心。

And all day long, 这一整天下来，

not a single person had bought a match from her. 连一个人都没找她买过一根火柴。
