The Fourth of July is Independence Day, one of the most important days in American history.

It celebrates July 4, 1776 — the day the thirteen colonies declared their freedom from England.

The colonists were tired of paying taxes to a king

who gave them no say in their own laws.

So their leaders gathered in Philadelphia,

and Thomas Jefferson wrote a document declaring the colonies

"free and independent states."

They signed it on July 4th, and the people celebrated with bells, drums, and even gunfire.

Americans still make plenty of noise today.

Families gather for picnics and barbecues — hamburgers, hot dogs, watermelon.

Flags fly from homes and cars, parades fill the streets,

and at night, fireworks light up the sky.

But beneath all the food

is one big idea worth remembering:

that ordinary people decided they had the right to govern themselves.

That idea was bold once.

It still is.
