For my fiftieth birthday, I gave myself a project. 五十岁生日那天,我给自己找了个活儿干。
I would write the story of my life. 我要把我自己的一生写下来。
One page a day, starting from the day I was born. 从我出生的那天写起,一天写一页。
I expected to write about the big things. 我原本以为自己会写些人生大事。
The exams. 比如那些考试。
The wedding. 比如婚礼。
The day we moved abroad. 比如我们搬去国外的日子。
Here's what surprised me. 但出乎我意料的是,
Those pages were short. 那些经历我都写得很短。
I knew the facts, but I couldn't feel them. 事情我都记得,但就是找不回当时的感觉了。
Then one morning I started writing about my grandfather's hands, 直到有一天早上,我动笔写起了我爷爷的手,
