When people ask who I admire, they expect a famous name.
I think of my grandfather.
He was a postman in a small town.
He never gave a speech in his life.
But every morning, for forty-one years, he got up at five.
He polished his shoes, though nobody looks at a postman's shoes.
Then he rode out, in rain,
in snow, in the heat, with the letters.
He was never late.
He told me once, "Somebody is waiting for that letter.
Maybe it's the only good thing in their day."
He didn't change the world.
He didn't try to.
I've met many brilliant people since.
Most of them are brilliant on good days.
My grandfather was the same on every day.
I'm beginning to think that's the rarer thing.
I polish my shoes now.
Nobody looks at them, either.
