A button fell off my coat. 我大衣上掉了一颗扣子。

For a week, I carried it in my pocket and did nothing. 整整一个星期，我都把它揣在兜里，啥也没管。

I could take it to the tailor. 我可以拿去裁缝铺弄。

Or I could do it myself. 或者我自己来也行。

I'm forty-two. 我都四十二了。

I should be able to sew on a button. 总该会缝个扣子吧。

I found a needle and some thread. 我找了根针和一点线。

Getting the thread through the needle took five tries. 光是把线穿进针眼里，就试了五次。

I said some things. 我还忍不住爆了几句粗口。

Then I sewed. 然后我就开始缝了。

I wasn't sure when to stop, so I kept going. 我吃不准该什么时候停，就一直缝下去。

I made a knot the size of a pea. 最后我打了个豌豆那么大的结。

It's not pretty. 缝得并不好看。

That was two winters ago. 那已经是两个冬天前的事了。

Every other button on that coat has come loose since. 从那以后，那件大衣上的其他扣子全松了。

It was sewn by someone who didn't know when to stop. 毕竟，那可是一个不知道什么时候该停手的人缝的。
