My plant had stopped growing. 我的植物不长了。

For a year, no new leaves. 一整年都没抽一片新叶子。

I gave it more water, then less water, 我多浇过水，也少浇过水，

then a place by the window. 后来还把它挪到了窗边。

Nothing helped. 但都没用。

Then a friend who knows about plants picked it up 后来，一个懂植物的朋友把它拿了起来，

and turned it over. 翻过来看了看底儿。

"Look," she said. “你瞧，”她说。

The roots were coming out of the hole in the bottom. 根都从花盆底部的孔里钻出来了。

Inside, there was almost no soil left. 里面几乎没剩什么土了。

Only roots, going round and round in circles, pressed against the walls. 全是根，一圈一圈地打着转，紧紧贴在盆壁上。

"It's got nowhere to go," she said. “它已经没地方长了，”她说。

I bought a pot one size bigger. 我买了个大一号的花盆。

I put in fresh soil. 换上了新土。

I opened the roots gently with my fingers, like untying a knot. 我用手指轻轻地把那些根理顺开，像是在解一个死结。

A month later, there were three new leaves. 一个月后，它冒出了三片新叶子。

It had wanted to grow the whole time. 原来它一直都想长大的。

It didn't need better care. 它需要的不是更用心的照料。
