We'd been in the new apartment for five days.

Boxes everywhere.

On Sunday evening, someone knocked.

It was an older woman from across the hall.

She was holding a plate covered with a cloth,

and steam was coming out at the edges.

"I made too many," she said.

Nobody makes too many by accident.

Dumplings.

We ate them standing up, among the boxes,

and for the first time that week,

the place felt like somewhere people lived.

Then I had a problem.

The plate.

My mother taught me one rule about plates.

You never give one back empty.

So I baked cookies, badly, and carried the plate across the hall.

A week later, it came back.

With spring rolls.

That plate has been crossing the hall for three years.

Neither of us will let it end.
