I was late.

My hands were full: a laptop, a coffee,

a bag of lunch, an umbrella dripping on my shoes.

Across the lobby, the elevator doors were starting to close.

I walked faster, but I knew I wouldn't make it.

The next one would take four minutes.

The doors were almost shut.

Then a hand came out.

Just a hand, between the doors, and they opened again.

I got in.

"Thank you."

The hand belonged to a woman in a green coat.

She didn't say anything.

She gave a small nod,

the kind that means "of course," 就是那种表达“不客气”的意思,

and looked back up at the numbers.

She got off on six.

I never saw her again.

She has certainly forgotten me.

It cost her two seconds.

I think about that.

How cheap it is to change someone's morning.
