For a long time, 很长一段时间,

whenever a friend came to me upset about something,

I'd immediately start offering solutions.

Have you tried this, why don't you do that.

I thought I was being helpful.

But I slowly noticed they'd leave

the conversation looking more frustrated, not less.

One day a friend finally told me,

I don't need you to fix it, “我不需要你帮我解决问题,

I just need you to listen.

That changed everything.

Now, when someone is venting, I've learned to just be there.

To say, that sounds really hard, and mean it.

Most of the time, people already know what they need to do.

They're not looking for advice.

They're looking to feel less alone with the problem.

Sometimes the most helpful thing you can offer is not a solution,

but your full attention.
