Feeding a little one is equal parts meal and mess. 给小家伙喂饭，一半是在吃，一半是在搞破坏。

I tie a bib around his neck, 我给他脖子上系好围兜，

settle him into the high chair, and clip the tray in place. 抱进餐椅坐好，扣好小餐盘。

I load up a small spoon, do the little airplane routine, 我用小勺舀好辅食，玩起“小飞机来喽”的老把戏，

and — success — he opens up and takes a bite. 然后——大功告成——他张开嘴乖乖吃了一口。

Half of it, naturally, ends up on his face, 不出所料，有一半都蹭到了他脸上，

his hands, and somehow in his hair. 还有手上，不知怎么搞的连头发里都有。

Between bites I wipe his mouth and hands, 趁着两口之间的空当，我给他擦擦嘴和手，

a losing battle I fight anyway. 虽然明知是白费力气，但我还是照擦不误。

He grabs the spoon to do it himself, 他一把抢过勺子想自己吃，

so I let him make a glorious mess, 那我就随他去，由着他弄得乱七八糟，

because that's how he learns. 因为他就是这么学着来的嘛。

When he's had enough, 等他吃够了，

he turns his head away and clamps his mouth shut — message received. 就会把头扭到一边，嘴巴闭得紧紧的——得，信号收到。

Mealtimes are chaos, but watching him discover food, 每次吃饭都跟打仗一样，但看着他探索各种食物，

squishing and tasting everything, is oddly wonderful. 到处捏捏、什么都尝尝，倒也有一种奇妙的美好。

I wipe him down, and somehow the floor too. 我把他身上擦干净，不知怎么的，连地板也得顺带着擦一遍。
