Every time I call home, my mother answers the same way.

Not "Hello."

Not "How are you?"

She says, "Have you eaten?"

It doesn't matter what time it is.

Morning, midnight.

"Have you eaten?"

When I was a teenager, it drove me crazy.

Yes, Mom.

I ate.

I know how to eat.

Then I moved abroad,

and one evening I heard my roommate

on the phone with her mother.

"I love you," she said.

"Miss you."

I tried to remember my mother ever saying those words.

I couldn't.

And then I understood.

She says them every single call.

She just says them her own way.

"Have you eaten" means: Are you okay?

Is someone taking care of you?

I wish I could cook for you tonight.

Last week, she called.

I answered first.
