Lesson 9. 第九课

A Cold Welcome On Wednesday evening, 冷清的欢迎 周三晚上

we went to the town hall. 我们去了市政厅

It was the last day of the year, 那是那年的最后一天

and a large crowd of people had gathered under the town hall clock. 一大群人聚集在市政厅大钟下

It would strike twelve in twenty minutes' time. 再过二十分钟它就要敲十二点了

Fifteen minutes passed and then, 十五分钟过去了，然后

at five to twelve, 在差五分十二点的时候

the clock stopped. 钟停了

The big minute hand did not move. 大分针一动不动

We waited and waited, 我们等啊等

but nothing happened. 但啥也没发生

Suddenly, someone shouted, 突然，有人喊道

It's two minutes past twelve. 已经十二点过两分了

The clock has stopped. 钟停了

I looked at my watch. 我看了看手表

It was true. 还真是

The big clock refused to welcome the new year. 大钟拒绝迎接新年

At that moment, 就在那一刻

everybody began to laugh and sing. 大家都开始又笑又唱
