A wealthy old gentleman needed a boy to work in his house, 一个有钱的老先生想找个小伙子在家里干活，

and seven lads turned up for the job. 结果来了七个年轻人应聘。

But he had one rule: he couldn't stand snooping. 但他有个规矩：最讨厌别人乱翻乱看。

"A boy who peeks into a drawer," he liked to say, 他常说：“一个会偷看抽屉的孩子，

"will sooner or later take something out of it." 迟早会从里面偷拿东西。”

So he set up a special waiting room, 于是他特意布置了一间等候室，

The first couldn't resist lifting a dish cover, 第一个忍不住掀开了一个餐盘盖，

The fourth eased a cupboard open inch by inch, 第四个小心翼翼地把柜门一点点拉开，

until a barrel of lead shot came clattering down. 结果一桶铅弹哗啦啦砸了下来。

The fifth unscrewed a little box, 第五个拧开了一个小盒子，

and a toy snake leapt out at him. 一条玩具蛇猛地朝他弹了出来。

The sixth tried a key and got an electric shock. 第六个试着用钥匙开锁，结果被电了一下。

Every one of them was sent home. 他们全都被打发回了家。

The seventh boy sat in that room for twenty minutes and didn't touch a thing. 第七个孩子在屋里规规矩矩坐了二十分钟，什么都没碰。

He got the job, 他得到了这份工作，

and kept it for the rest of his master's life. 并且一直干到老爷子去世。

None of the traps were hard to avoid. 这些陷阱其实一点都不难避开，
