On a bright morning in ancient Rome,
two boys stood in a garden,
watching their mother walk with a friend.
The friend was a rich woman, covered in gold rings and necklaces.
Their mother, Cornelia,
wore a plain white dress and no jewelry at all.
After lunch, the visitor asked a servant to bring her jewelry box.
Inside were pearls as white as milk,
red rubies, and diamonds that flashed in the sun.
The boys stared.
"If only our mother had things like that," the younger one whispered.
The friend closed the box and turned to Cornelia.
"Is it true what people say, my dear?
That you're poor?
That you have no jewels at all?"
"Oh, I'm not poor," said Cornelia.
She put an arm around each of her sons and pulled them close.
"These are my jewels.
And they're worth more than everything in your box."
Both boys grew up to be famous leaders of Rome.
