第二根火柴：烤鹅

She struck the second match. 她划亮了第二根火柴。

It flared up, and where its light fell, 火苗呼地蹿了起来，火光照到的地方，

the wall became as thin and clear as a veil. 墙壁变得像薄纱一样又薄又透。

She could see right into a room. 她一眼就能看进屋里去。

The table was covered with a snow-white cloth and fine china, 桌上铺着雪白的台布，摆满了精致的瓷器，

and on it sat a roast goose, 上面摆着一只烤鹅，

stuffed with apples and prunes, steaming deliciously. 肚子里塞满了苹果和西梅，冒着诱人的热气。

Then the most wonderful thing happened. 紧接着，神奇的事情发生了。

The goose hopped down from the dish and waddled across the floor, 那只鹅居然从盘子里跳了下来，一摇一摆地在地板上走着，

with a knife and fork still sticking in its back, 背上还插着刀叉，

straight toward the poor little girl. 直奔着可怜的小女孩走过来。

Hunger has a way of making dreams feel almost real. 饥饿真能让人觉得梦境跟真的一样。

Then the match went out, 这时，火柴灭了，

and there was nothing left but the thick, cold, damp wall. 眼前除了那堵又厚、又冷、又潮湿的墙，什么都没剩下。

She sat in the dark, trembling. 她坐在黑暗里，冻得瑟瑟发抖。

And she struck a third match. 接着，她又划亮了第三根火柴。
