Part of having a pet is keeping an eye on the little things. 养宠物嘛，平时就得多留心各种小细节。

Today my dog needs his monthly pill, 今天我家狗子该吃每月的药了，

so I hide it inside a treat and, 我就把它藏在零食里，

just like that, it's gone — the oldest trick in the book. 一眨眼就吞下去了——老套路总是百试百灵。

He's got a small patch of dry skin, 他身上有一小块皮肤有点发干，

so I dab a bit of ointment on it and give him a chin rub so he forgives me. 我就抹了点药膏，顺便挠挠他的下巴好让他消消气。

After our muddy walk, 踩了一脚泥遛弯回来，

I wipe down each of his paws with a damp cloth before he tracks it through the house. 趁他还没把泥踩得满屋都是，我拿湿布把他四只爪子挨个擦干净。

I check his ears and eyes, 我看了看他的耳朵和眼睛，

and run my hands along his sides for anything unusual, 又顺着他的身侧摸了一遍，看有没有什么不对劲，

the way the vet showed me. 就像宠物医生教我的那样。

They can't tell us when something is wrong, 毛孩子哪里不舒服又不会说话，

so we learn to read them instead — 所以我们只能学着去读懂它们的信号——

a limp, a change in appetite, a quiet day. 走起路来有点瘸、胃口变了、或者哪天突然格外安静。

All clear this time. 这次检查一切正常。

I give him one last scratch and let him go back to his nap. 我最后挠了挠他，放他回去接着睡大觉了。
