Shoes are the last thing before I head out.

I sit on the little bench by the door,

loosen the laces, and slide my feet in.

For my dress shoes,

I use a shoehorn so I don't crush the heel —

a small trick that saves them over time.

Then I lace them up, pull the ends snug,

and tie a double knot so they don't come undone halfway down the street.

Before I go, 临出门前,

I remember the forecast and give my boots a quick spray of waterproofing.

On the weekend I'll give my good leather shoes a proper polish,

buffing them until they shine.

People say you can tell a lot about someone by their shoes —

maybe that is why I like keeping mine in decent shape.

Laced up and ready, I grab my bag and open the door.
