Faster than sound. 比声音还快

Once a year, 每年一次

a race is held for old cars. 会举办一场老爷车比赛

A lot of cars entered for this race last year, 去年有很多车参加了这场比赛

and there was a great deal of excitement just before it began. 比赛开始前，气氛那叫一个热闹

One of the most handsome cars was a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost. 最拉风的一辆车是劳斯莱斯银魅

The most unusual car was a Benz, 最特别的车是一辆奔驰

which had only three wheels. 只有三个轮子

Built in 1885, 1885年造的

it was the oldest car taking part. 是参赛车里头最老的一辆

After a great many loud explosions, 在一阵噼里啪啦的巨响之后

the race began. 比赛开始了

Many of the cars broke down on the course, 好多车半路就趴窝了

and some drivers spent more time under their cars than in them. 有些司机在车底下待的时间比在车里还长

A few cars, however, 不过呢，还是有几辆车

completed the race. 跑完了全程

The winning car reached a speed of 40 miles an hour, 冠军车跑到了每小时40英里

much faster than any of its rivals. 比对手们快了一大截

It sped downhill at the end of the race, 比赛结束时它冲下了山坡

and its driver had a lot of trouble trying to stop it. 司机费了好大劲才把它刹住

The race gave everyone a great deal of pleasure. 这场比赛让大家乐坏了

It was very different from modern car races, 跟现代赛车比赛完全不一样

but no less exciting. 但刺激程度一点不差
