Someone once wrote to a state trooper with a complaint.
I heard that driving 5 or 10 miles over the limit is fine,
but I got a ticket for going just 7 over,
and it cost me over $100.
Shouldn't I have gotten a warning?
The trooper's reply was honest.
I'm the one who gave you that ticket.
A warning was an option,
but you were flying down the left lane, passing everyone,
and then you passed my clearly marked squad car
while I was driving the speed limit.
When I stopped you, you told me, going 75, ain't nothing.
Here is the truth, the trooper explained.
There is no law that lets you go even one mile over the posted limit.
The five over is fine idea is simply a myth.
And it is a dangerous one.
For every 10 miles per hour above 50, your chance of dying in a crash doubles.
Speed feels like nothing, right up until the moment it becomes everything.
