I'll never forget that trip.

The sun was bright, the sea was calm,

and my father strolled proudly around the deck in his frock coat.

Then he noticed two elegant ladies being offered oysters by two gentlemen.

An old, ragged sailor was opening them with a knife.

The ladies ate them daintily,

tipping their heads forward so as not to stain their dresses,

then tossed the shells into the sea.

My father was charmed.

It seemed so refined, so distinguished.

He hurried over to us.

"Would you like me to treat you to some oysters?"

My mother hesitated, worried about the cost.

But my sisters said yes at once.

We're never so extravagant as when we're trying to look rich.

So my father took my sisters and the new son-in-law over to the old sailor.

And I followed.
