It was a great battle at sea,

and the French flagship was on fire.

Flames were climbing the masts.

The sailors who were still alive jumped into a small boat and rowed away.

They knew there was gunpowder below the deck.

But one person stayed.

He was the captain's son, a boy of about twelve.

His father had told him to stand at his post and not to leave until he said so.

"Come with us!"

the men shouted.

He shook his head.

"Not until my father tells me."

He didn't know that his father was already dead.

"Father!"

he called through the smoke.

"May I go now?"

There was no answer.

He called again and waited.

Then the fire reached the gunpowder.

People have told this story for two hundred years.

Some call it courage.

Others say a rule should never matter more than a life.

Maybe that argument is why we still tell it.
