测量挂画

I've had this picture leaning against the wall for weeks, 这幅画靠在墙边搁好几个礼拜了，

so today it is finally going up. 今天终于要把它挂上去了。

I pull out the tape measure and mark where the center should sit, 我拿卷尺量了量，标出中心点的位置，

roughly at eye level. 差不多跟视线平齐。

I hold a small level against the wall and adjust until the little bubble sits dead in the middle — 我把小水平尺贴在墙上调整，直到气泡稳稳停在正中间——

no crooked frames in this house. 我家可不允许有挂歪了的画框。

Then I drill a hole, 接着我钻了个孔，

tap in a wall plug, and drive in the hook. 敲进膨胀胶塞，拧好挂钩。

I hang the frame, step back, 我把画框挂上去，退后几步，

and tilt my head — a hair to the left, there. 歪着头打量——往左一点点，好了。

Measure twice and drill once, as my dad used to say, 就像我爸常说的，“量两次，钻一次”，

and you save yourself a wall full of holes. 省得搞出一墙的窟窿。

I sweep up the little bit of dust, 我扫掉了落下的那点灰，

run a cloth over the glass, 拿抹布擦了擦玻璃，

and there it is — a bare wall suddenly feels like home. 大功告成——原本光秃秃的墙，一下子就有了家的感觉。
