When a child's temperature rises above normal, she has a fever.
It can be alarming for parents — but a fever is usually a good sign.
It means the body is doing its job, fighting off an infection.
Most fevers are harmless and pass within a couple of days.
Because the fever is actually helping, you don't always need to reach for medicine.
If a child is truly uncomfortable,
the right dose of a children's fever medicine can help — 适当剂量的儿童退烧药会有帮助——
but read the label carefully,
and never give a child aspirin,
which is dangerous for them.
The most important things are simple:
keep her drinking plenty of fluids,
and dress her in light clothing
so her body can cool down.
Still, 不过,
know when to call the doctor:
if a baby under three months has any fever at all,
if the fever climbs very high,
if it lasts more than a few days,
or if the child has a seizure.
A fever can frighten a parent.
But more often than not, it is not a sign
that something is going wrong — 表明有什么不对劲——
it is a sign that your child's body is fighting back.
