When I was a child, 我小的时候，

we took the night train to my grandmother's. 我们总是坐夜班火车去我奶奶家。

It was green, and slow, and it stopped at every small station. 那是绿皮车，开得很慢，每个小站都要停。

We couldn't afford beds. 我们买不起卧铺。

We sat up all night on hard seats, 就坐了一整晚的硬座，

four of us, knees touching. 我们一家四口，膝盖挨着膝盖。

The car smelled of instant noodles and orange peel. 车厢里飘着泡面和橘子皮的味道。

Strangers shared sunflower seeds. 素不相识的人互相分着瓜子。

And the sound. 还有那个声音。

Ka-dunk, ka-dunk. 咣当，咣当。

All night long. 响了整整一夜。

I fell asleep against my father's arm, 我靠着父亲的胳膊睡着了，

and woke up with the pattern of his sleeve on my face. 醒来时脸上印着他衣袖的压痕。

It took fourteen hours. 那一趟要坐十四个小时。

Last year, I made the same trip. 去年，我又走了同一趟路。

The new train is white and silent. 新列车是白色的，安安静静。

It took three hours. 只花了三个小时。

It's better. 现在确实更好了。

I would never go back. 我也绝不想再坐回那种慢车。

But somewhere around the second hour, I caught myself listening for it. 但到了差不多第二个小时，我发现自己竟然在侧耳倾听。

Ka-dunk, ka-dunk. 咣当，咣当。

We arrived so fast 我们到得太快了，

that I never had time to be on my way. 快到我都还没来得及体会身在旅途的感觉。
