We came around a corner in the park,

and the traffic had stopped.

A long line of cars, twenty or thirty, engines off.

Then I saw him.

A bison, in the middle of the road.

He was enormous, the size of a small car,

with a huge dark head and a beard.

And he was walking.

Slowly.

Right down the yellow line, like he owned it.

He did not move over.

He did not hurry.

Here's what amazed me.

Nobody honked.

Not one car.

In the city, if you wait two seconds at a green light,

someone behind you leans on the horn.

Here, thirty cars sat in perfect silence,

for fifteen minutes, behind an animal with nowhere to be.

It turns out we can all be patient.

We just need something worth waiting for.
